Things to do in Rochester
Photography lovers shouldn’t miss the George Eastman Museum, which was home to the founder of Kodak until 1932. Explore the exhibits tracing the history of photography and the lush gardens of this early-20th-century estate, with old films shown every night in the on-site Dryden Theatre.
If you’re travelling with kids, head to the Rochester Museum and Science Center, which features hands-on and interactive exhibits focused on space, technology and the natural world. Embark on a simulator submarine dive to the bottom of Lake Ontario or problem solve in the Inventor Center, then wander the history exhibits detailing the American Civil War.
The Strong National Museum of Play is another family-friendly highlight and explores the history of play in an interactive and engaging manner. It’s home to the first permanent video game exhibit in the United States and the National Toy Hall of Fame, as well as the largest indoor butterfly garden in New York.
Just south of downtown Rochester lies the Genesee Valley Park, famed for its three beautiful waterfalls and scenic gorge. Witness the old milling equipment and warehouses of the High Falls Center and sample craft beers in the restaurant of the Genesee Brew House.
Getting around Rochester
Greater Rochester International Airport is 10 minutes’ drive south-west of the city centre and there are regular trains from New York City, Chicago and Boston. Buses access most corners of the city, while the Rochester Skyway lets you explore on foot.
