Named after a former congressman, Thomas Henry Ball, Tomball is located on the northwestern outskirts of Houston. It was settled as a farming community in the early 19th century before the railroad arrived 100 years later, resulting in a boom in boarding houses, stores and saloons. In 1933, a well was drilled into the Tomball Oil Field.
