Things to do in South Portland
Enjoy uninterrupted views over Portland Harbor from Bug Light Park. The former World War II shipbuilding yard is reimagined as a scenic waterfront park. Stroll along the foreshore, enjoy a picnic on the grass and admire the park’s landmark lighthouse, which was built in 1875. It’s been helping ships navigate in and out of Portland Harbor for more than a century. The park moonlights as a venue for summer events like outdoor movies, kite festivals and 4th of July fireworks shows.
Take a dip at Willard Beach, a family-friendly beach set on a sheltered cove. Relax on the pebble sand, swim in the calm water and enjoy fantastic views of Cushing Island and Casco Bay. Low tide reveals crystalline pools filled with crabs, anemones and other sea creatures.
Stretch your legs and enjoy the views on the Greenbelt Walkway. The nine-kilometre trail stretches along the waterfront and takes you through a patchwork of forests, wetlands and marshes. Explore the greenbelt on foot or rent a bike. The popular Spring Point Shoreway finishes at a historic lighthouse perched on a granite breakwater.
From fluffy lobster rolls to creamy chowder, seafood is a delicacy in South Portland. Start your day with a serve of “ployes” buckwheat pancakes slathered in butter and maple syrup. Save room for whoopie pies, a Pine Tree State favourite featuring vanilla buttercream sandwiched between soft cookies.
