Set against a vibrant landscape of rice paddies and cherry blossoms, Saga is a metropolitan gem with bustling markets and rich Japanese traditions. This urbanised area is a cultural hub offering modern shopping and dining alongside historic shrines and castles.
Things to do in Saga
For a dose of Japanese history, head to the Saga Castle History Museum to see architectural displays and cultural exhibits. Tour the restored castle, weaving through a variety of artefacts that transport you back to the time of samurais and shoguns.
For the best views of the city, ride the elevator up to the Sage Prefectural Government Observation Deck, the tallest point in Saga. Admire panoramic views on a clear day or stay past dusk to watch the city come alive with brilliant points of light.
If you’re looking for a break from urban life, visit the Saga Shrine, where you can spend a moment in quiet contemplation away from the bustling city. The shrine is located near the castle and offers a display of traditional adornments and a picturesque stream trickling in the background.
Travelling with the kids? Head to Kono Park, tucked away on the north-west side of the railway station. During Sakura season the beautiful trees are in full bloom. It also has amusement rides and food stalls brimming with candy floss, yakitori and takoyaki.
