Nestled in the north of Greece’s Dodecanese group, Patmos is a sun-drenched island in the Aegean Sea. It’s famed as the location where John the Theologian received a vision from Jesus before going on to write the Book of Revelation.
For a day at the beach, head south to Petra, a rocky stretch of coastline with umbrellas and sun loungers for rent. In the island’s northern region is Agriolivadi, a beach area and popular destination for water sports. Don’t miss visiting the Windmills of Patmos, two of which date back to the 16th century.
Pilgrims should head to the Cave of the Apocalypse, which is where St. John the Theologian is said to have penned the Book of Revelations. Also of religious significance is the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Monastery of St. John the Theologian, an 11th-century landmark watching over the whitewashed houses of Chora.
Getting there
Regular ferries connect to Skala from the Piraeus port, which is around 30 minutes’ drive from Athens International Airport. Buses travel around Patmos and connect most of its towns and villages. Renting a car will give you greater freedom to explore the island.
