New Westminster is one of British Columbia's most characterful communities, filled with heritage buildings and fringed by a lively waterfront district. Spend your time strolling around historic neighbourhoods, shopping at local markets and cruising along the Fraser River.
Things to do in New Westminster
Set on the waterfront, River Market is New Westminster's premier shopping, dining and drinking destination. The undercover market is filled with boutique shops, artisan stalls and colourful food vendors. It also moonlights as a venue for craft fairs, flea markets and other community events.
The Fraser River Discovery Centre showcases British Columbia's rich First Nations heritage. Inside you'll find two floors of exhibit space showcasing Musqueam artefacts, such as salmon fishing tools. Kids will love the interactive indoor trail that explores the ecology of the Fraser River by foot, canoe and bike.
Stroll along the riverside boardwalk at Westminster Pier Park, a scenic stretch of Metro Vancouver dotted with playgrounds and picnic tables. The park is anchored by WOW Westminster, a 140-foot-high outdoor art installation constructed from repurposed shipping containers. Alternatively, head down to Westminster Quay and embark on a scenic Paddlewheeler Riverboat Tour.
Housed in a wooden steam-powered sternwheeler, the Samson V Museum recalls New Westminster's maritime heritage. Today the galley, mess, cabins and engine area have been restored to their original condition. If you’re interested in heritage architecture, pick up a map from the New Westminster Museum and enjoy a self-guided walking tour of the city's historic neighbourhoods.
