Surrounded by snow-capped mountains and volcanic peaks, National Park boasts scenery made famous by the “Lord of the Rings” movie franchise. The lively town is a gateway to Tongariro National Park, where you'll find world-class ski resorts, alpine hiking trails and a variety of outdoor adventures.
Things to do in National Park Village
National Park is near Whakapapa, New Zealand's largest ski area. Beginners will love the gentle slopes in Happy Valley, while intermediates and expert skiers and snowboarders can take on challenging slopes, chutes and off-piste trails on Mount Ruapehu. The chairlifts continue to operate in the summer and offer panoramic views over the mountains.
Serious hikers can take on the Tongariro Alpine Crossing, a scenic alpine trail that winds past bubbling mud pots, shimmering lakes and wildflower-strewn fields. You'll also capture stunning views of Ngauruhoe, the peak made famous as Mount Doom in the “Lord of the Rings” movies.
Tongariro National Park has been granted dual UNESCO World Heritage status for its unique volcanic landscape and spiritual significance for Maori people. At the Tongariro National Park Visitor Centre, you can learn about ancient mythology and the local Tuwharetoa tribe, who believe the park's three mountains are Maori warriors.
National Park offers a wealth of outdoor adventures, including mountain biking, kayaking, stand-up paddleboarding and white-water rafting. Anglers can fish for trout in the Tongariro River, while thrill seekers can sign up for quad bike adventures and scenic flights over undulating mountains.
