The town is set on the banks of Lake Naivasha and is a stone’s throw from some of the best game parks and wildlife reserves in Africa. Things to do in Naivasha
Small and pedestrian-friendly, Naivasha is a great base for exploring the surrounding parks. The town is dotted with local restaurants where you can enjoy Kenyan specialties such as “ugali” maize flour porridge, “sukuma wiki” greens and “nyama choma” grilled goat meat.
Cycling safaris in Hell’s Gate National Park offer a unique chance to get up close with African wildlife. Bikes can be rented from the main entrance gate and take you past herds of zebra, gazelles and warthogs. Keep your eyes peeled for vultures and buzzards circling overhead. Just outside the park, Olkaria Geothermal Spa is a great place to soothe your muscles after a long day.
Crescent Island Game Sanctuary is another mecca for wildlife. With no dangerous predators to watch out for, it’s safe to explore the park on foot. You’ll love coming face-to-face with zebras, impalas, waterbuck and other African animals.
Scenic cruises around Lake Naivasha are a good way to spot hippos and crocodiles basking in the shallows. The lake is also a sanctuary for pelicans, egrets, herons, cormorants and African fish eagles. Surrounded by lush greenery, Crater Lake is nestled in an ancient volcanic caldera. Scenic hiking trails wind through the park and are great for stretching your legs.
Getting around Naivasha
Naivasha’s town centre is compact and easy to get around on foot. Taxis are a fast and comfortable way to get around while private drivers are a good way to visit surrounding parks and attractions.
