Serving as the seat of its namesake county, Medina is a northern Ohio city that was originally founded in 1818. It flourished following the completion of the Ohio and Erie Canal, which helped to transport the area’s agricultural produce and quarried stone to markets across the United States.
Things to do in Medina
In the heart of the city is the Medina Public Square Historic District, which is clustered with stores selling artisan wares and locally made goods. You can relax in the leafy square or admire the Medina County Courthouse, a magnificent building that combines Greek Revival and Second Empire architectural styles. This bustling square also hosts the annual Medina Ice Festival, which showcases some of Ohio’s best ice sculptors.
A short walk south of the square is Castle Noel, a Christmas-themed museum that brings festive cheer throughout the year. It’s also home to an alien-themed miniature golf course that’s complete with animated figures, colourful illuminations and thrilling 3D effects. A wide choice of specialty cocktails is served at the North Pole-themed Polar Bear Club.
A short drive south-east of Medina is Roscoe Ewing Park, where you’ll find a children’s playground, a disc golf course and several walking trails. North-east of the city centre is Reagan Park, which features mountain biking trails, sporting facilities and a skate park. Just across the Rocky River is Huffman Park and the Weymouth Country Club, which boasts an 18-hole course designed by Geoffrey Cornish.
Getting around Medina
Medina is around 40 minutes’ drive from the centre of Cleveland and 25 minutes from Cleveland Hopkins International Airport, which has flights to destinations across North America.
