Located on the eastern outskirts of the San Francisco Bay Area, Livermore is a historic city in California’s Alameda County. It was originally home to the Chochenyo people before becoming grazing land for the Spanish Mission of San Jose. Livermore was officially incorporated in 1876 following the arrival of the railroad and has grown to become the most populous city in the Tri-Valley.
Things to do in Livermore
Don’t miss the Discovery Center of the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, which offers a behind-the-scenes look at the institution’s state-of-the-art research. You can step inside a replica of the National Ignition Facility’s target chamber and ride the energy bike to discover how much “pedal power” it takes to illuminate a bulb.
Sprawling south of Livermore is Del Valle Regional Park, which centres around an artificial reservoir created in 1968 with the damming of the Arroyo Valle. It’s a popular destination for swimming, boating and fishing, and is traversed by around 45 kilometres of hiking, cycling and horseback riding trails. Del Valle Regional Park is connected to the Mission Peak Regional Preserve along the Ohlone Wilderness Trail.
North-east of Livermore is the Shiva-Vishnu Temple, an ornately decorated Hindu temple serving as a cultural hub for the area’s Indian community. Marvel at the deities carved into its whitewashed gopuram before stepping inside the expansive hall. Shiva-Vishnu Temple is noted for its huge kitchen, which serves vegan meals to the wider community.
