Named after an English town in Sussex, Horsham is one of the oldest of Montgomery County’s original municipalities. In its north is a large military base home to the Pennsylvania Air National Guard and the Pennsylvania Army National Guard, as well as the United States Army Reserve.
Things to do in Horsham
If you’re interested in the region’s aviation history, pay a visit to the Harold F. Pitcairn Wings of Freedom Aviation Museum, which is named after the American aviation inventor and pioneer. It houses an impressive collection of historic aircraft that include a Douglas Skyhawk, a Lockheed Orion and a Sikorsky Seabat, as well as air-to-air missiles and ejection seats.
Travelling with kids? They can let loose on the accessible play equipment of Everybody's Playground, which is located within Lukens Park. This green space also boasts a covered picnic area, a basketball court and grassy lawns for playing baseball. Traversing Lukens Park is the nine-kilometre-long Powerline Trail, which can be enjoyed on foot, on a bicycle or on horseback.
Horsham makes an excellent base for visiting the Glencairn Museum, which occupies a castle-inspired mansion in the Bryn Athyn Historic District. Originally built by Raymond Pitcairn in the 1930s, it is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The museum houses around 8,000 artworks, including pieces from ancient Egypt, the Roman Empire and medieval Europe and hosts special events throughout the year.
Getting around Horsham
Horsham is around 35 minutes' drive from the centre of Philadelphia and Philadelphia International Airport, which has flights to destinations across North America, Europe and the Middle East. Buses connect Horsham to suburbs throughout Philadelphia while renting a car gives you greater freedom to explore the area.
