Things to do in Fraser Island

Don’t miss seeing the historic SS Maheno Shipwreck, which was used as a hospital ship in World War I and has been wrecked on Fraser Island since 1935. A short drive south from the Maheno is Eli Creek, where you can swim or float down the freshwater creek, thanks to a strong current.

Looking for a day of swimming? Drive inland to the beautiful Lake McKenzie to discover pure white silica sand and a picturesque contrast light and dark blue water. Lake Wabby is also popular, known for its steep sand dunes that lead down into cool waters that are home to giant catfish. Bring your bodyboard along and ride it down the dunes into the water.

Indian Head sits to the north of Fraser Island and offers rewarding hikes with panoramic views of the Coral Sea and Orchid Beach at its summit. You can also see sharks, whales and sea turtles in the waters below. Head to the nearby Champagne Pools at high tide to sit in the natural rock pools while waves crash over and create the bubbling effect of champagne.

If you’re hunting for souvenirs, head to one of the townships along the eastern shore, such as Eurong or Happy Valley. The latter has a classic Aussie-style pub with cold beers and hearty fare.
