Founded as a railroad terminus in 1870, East Point is an ethnically diverse suburb in south-west Atlanta. It takes its name from its location at the easternmost point of the Atlanta & West Point Railroad, which connects south-west to the city of West Point along Georgia’s border with Alabama.
Things to do in East Point
Stroll through the historic heart of East Point to admire the City Hall, a red-brick masterpiece fronted by a series of whitewashed columns. It forms part of the East Point Historic Civic Block, which also includes the City Auditorium, the New Deal Library and Victory Park. Nearby is the historic First Baptist Church, which was founded back in 1888.
East Point is an ideal base for visiting the Delta Flight Museum, which occupies two aircraft hangars constructed in the 1940s. It encompasses a full-scale replica of Delta’s former headquarters in Louisiana, as well as one of its first passenger aircraft, a 1931 Travel Air 6000. See a training aircraft known as the “Gull Wing” and experience what it’s like to be in the first-class cabin of a Boeing 747-400.
One of East Point’s most popular green spaces is Sykes Park, which encompasses old-growth trees and large granite boulders surrounded by mountain biking trails. There are options to suit all abilities, as well as a pump track and several skills areas. Also within the park are a children’s playground, basketball courts and picnic shelters.
