Serving as the seat of Rockdale County, Conyers is a historic city and suburb on the eastern outskirts of Atlanta. It was established in the early 19th century as a watering post along the Georgia Railroad and was named after a local banker who once owned the land, Dr. William Denson Conyers.
Things to do in Conyers
Spend an afternoon strolling around Olde Town Conyers, a beautifully preserved district clustered with specialty stores and eateries. Occupying a historic train depot is the Conyers Welcome Center, which offers a wealth of information about what to see and do in the area. Be sure to admire the 1905 “Dinky” locomotive and visit the Lewis Vaughn Botanical Garden with its picturesque waterfalls and koi-filled ponds.
A short drive east of Conyers is the Georgia International Horse Park, which hosted equestrian, mountain biking and pentathlon events during the 1996 Summer Olympics. It provides a setting for horse shows, obstacle course races and concerts, with everyone from the Allman Brothers Band to the Foo Fighters having performed here.
Located within the grounds of the Georgia International Horse Park is the Cherokee Run Golf Club, which centres around an 18-hole course designed by Arnold Palmer. It winds its way between wetlands and granite outcroppings in the rolling hills of Rockdale County, with almost 100 bunkers to challenge all experience levels. In the clubhouse is a fully-stocked pro shop, plus a restaurant serving hearty American fare.
Getting around Conyers
Conyers is around 30 minutes’ drive from the centre of Atlanta and 40 minutes from Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport, which has flights to destinations across the globe. Buses connect to Conyers, although renting a car will give you greater freedom to explore the area. Conyers’ historic centre is ideally explored on foot.
